Safari lodges in Botswana

Botswana doesn’t really do one kind of safari.

From the vast Makgadikgadi Salt Pans to the waterways of Chobe and the floodplains of the Okavango Delta, the landscape can change completely and so can the safari.

Palm trees and termite mounds on a green floodplain beneath dramatic storm clouds in golden evening light, Botswana.

Is Botswana right for you?

Yes

It could be your kind of safari if…

  • Wide open spaces and pristine wild landscapes appeal to you
  • You prefer smaller camps and fewer people around
  • You like the idea of swapping four wheels for a mokoro or boat (when the season allows)

Perhaps not

It may not be for you if…

  • You want your safari budget to stretch a little further
  • You prefer a safari experience that is predictable
  • Smaller planes and remote airstrips fill you with dread rather than excitement

A few things worth knowing

Best time to visit

There’s no single best time – it depends on which Botswana you want to see.

Dry season: May – October
  • Wildlife gathers around permanent water
  • Warm, sunny days as the landscape turns drier
  • Okavango floodwaters transform parts of the Delta
  • July to October is peak season, with prices to match
Green season: November – April
  • Summer rains turn the landscape green
  • Fewer visitors, quieter safaris and often more attractive rates
  • Hotter days, warm evenings and occasional afternoon thunderstorms
  • New arrivals, migratory birds, and predator activity

Getting there

Sometimes the best views come before you’ve even arrived.

  • Most travellers connect to Botswana via Johannesburg or Cape Town
  • Maun is the main gateway for safaris into the Okavango Delta
  • From Maun, a light aircraft will take you into the Delta and private concessions
  • Your final hop to camp may be by game-drive vehicle or boat, depending on where you’re staying
  • Combining camps often means flying between them so a window seat is highly recommended
